"Mystery" of Transcribe

Transcribe: To make a full written or typewritten copy of (dictated material, for example).

Have you ever noticed that it is very natural for us human to tell a story when you're talking and having an interesting conversation with someone. Did you notice the tone, pause and feelings you tend to use when you are talking???  It is a very natural process after all....

 However, when you turn this natural event into something new such as transcribing, a new world will be open to you. Imagine having need to write the whole things of what people discuss for example, into a piece of paper (well, this is a very traditional methods) or typing it you will think and feel that humans interaction is a whole lot interesting that you can imagine. This is because when you transcribe the interaction in a classroom perhaps, you need to see and listen and give your fullest attention to grasp and receive properly what the content of the "interaction".

Transcribing that I experienced is writing every single things that happen in the 1 minute YouTube video which end up to be 20 minutes writing. Imagine that, but of course it is very natural again because in just 1 minute people actually didn't realizes that they use lots of different tone, language (simple sentences and complex sentences), pause and a lots more. There is a system create to simplify the transcribing process such as using a symbol of (T) to symbolize a teacher.


It's takes time and patient to transcribe because every detail need to be detailed. Why not trying to transcribe some of the YouTube video especially "teacher and students discussion" for some experience. It will surely help you to be patient and more analytical person to a certain extent. Enjoy!!!

"Diamond Fell From The Sky"

I still remember that day (Friday, 1 March 2013) when we are all together welcoming special guest from the Refugee school ( Myanmar). All the guest from the age of 5 years to 17 years coming to the lecture room stepping the stairs and went to sit into their respective place after being guided by the "Education students". Seeing the students, makes me wonder... "Are they really from Refugee School?" ... the way they dressed and even have their own i-pad and smart phones bring unbelievable situation to us. Not only that,it change my conception about refugee students as whole. "Real life situation sure is different"...that's what I though..


Anyway, we have brief introduction with  the special guest and move along into grouping them into five groups. What makes it more interesting for me is that I am one of the group leader, therefore, I have the opportunity  to know and interact more with the "diamonds". I am the tour guide of the Orange group with 5 students and one of the students have fluent English and it makes the process of interacting among the small students and the rest much more easier for me and them to as the fluent students can translate what I am saying to the rest ;)

More than that, we played several games ( scavenger hunt, building bridge from newspaper, traffic light game, blindfolded game, loop news paper game)with the students around the campus, firstly the students cannot comprehend what we are trying to make them played ..well, except for the  proficiency English language student. Then, I need to make my classmates to simplify the words he's using and do some practical demonstration for them to understand better what is going one :) I learned that the little ones is very excited and determined to help her group mates, which is very good from my observation :) They actually enjoyed and starting to be friendly with me and after the first round and I use this "extra" opportunity to talk to them about the campus environment and the purpose of each building. Even though some times I need to use sign language and mimicking a certain objects to make the students understand better, I really it's worth it because to be able to learn and teach people is one of the wonderful experience for me.

I also learn to control myself not to be over- excited because it doesn't seems professional as a teacher but it's alright sometimes as a tour guide :) Move on..I am a little concerned about the safety issues for the little children as they are so active when they are too excited in a period of time...hmmmm...

The last game is also very fun when all the students given the opportunity to "fight" to conquer the remaining chairs in the music chair games. Besides that, the scissor, paper, rock games makes me laugh because one of my friend, So Yeon lose to a little girl from start. I get the feel that all of the people involved in the process enjoying themselves a lot that day because another friends of mine turn into hyper active during the musical chair music..which makes me mesmerized..

End with the games, we allocate all the students into the Admin building to view the scenery of the mountain and give them some snacks of ("kaya" pau- rich pau :)and a botol of water). I have a talk session with my group about their experiences and they said it was very nice and they appreciate it. As a memory, the requested photographer takes pictures of my group together :)

In the future, I have a high hopes that we (Education people) go and visit the Refugee students and help them in their learning. It will be good to if they can come and visits us again :)
